super

We celebrated Reece’s birthday with friends on Saturday. It was a long awaited, talked about, and planned for party. We had a 1st birthday party for Reece in 2008, but since then we have not had a party for him.

This year, he wanted to have a party…

and, it was super.

As friends entered the house they were greeted by this…

I made the capes, they just added the decorations.

After the kids decorated their capes, the rest of the party was outside.

The tattoos were a hit.

It was so fun to see our yard decorated for the party and full of friends.

After some play and snacking it was time for the superheroes to save the day!

I love the look on Reece’s face as he’s watching the piñata be destroyed!

Everybody is ready to run for the loot…

The piñata was filled with superhero stickers, pencils, erasers, and fruit snacks.

The kids played for a little bit after the piñata.

One of the favorite places was the Batcave.

I threw some glow sticks under there for the kids to find. The girls took it over as their hideout…

Aren’t they all so pretty?

Cake was next on the agenda…

I have to admit, I did not cook a thing for this party. I bought the cake and put some of Reece’s superhero action figures on top.

Snacks were pretzels, popcorn, snack mix, and cheese puffs in buckets with paper bags for the kids to fill.

Drink choices were gatorade or water…and beer for the adults.

Finally, on to the gifts. The party was small enough that we could open the gifts during the party…and it was another “activity” for everybody to participate in.

Ryan was “warned” about the swarming that happens once gift opening begins…this is his reaction and description of actually seeing it happen!

Ryan was in charge of activities so I could take photos. He did an awesome job of keeping things under control.

Again, LOVED seeing friends filling our yard.

It was a super party.

Thank you to all the “Super Friends” who helped to make the day special!

I’ll be posting some of the details about the capes, bunting, invitations, piñata, and other homemade decorations in the coming days.

home is…a super celebration for our five year old!

super party prep

We have a 5th birthday party coming up.

So, I’m in SUPER party prep mode.

It’s kind of overwhelming…

I want to make sure he has fun with his friends.

I want it to be AMAZING.

I’m afraid I won’t do it JUSTICE.

I want it to be the WORLDS GREATEST.

And, in the end, a little bunting, some games, a piñata, and friends should be enough.

{summer list} some things are easier to cross off than others

We’ve been checking items off our summer list.

Zoo

Splash park

Watch fireworks

We had some friends over on the 4th of July. We ate, drank, played, set off fireworks, and walked to the local fireworks show down the street.

And, today…

Potty training

We didn’t check it off, but we inadvertently started. Lorelai wants to wear undies. So, after she got out of bed this morning we put undies on. Shortly after breakfast, I decided that we needed to get out of the house while Ryan worked from home. My plan was to go to Goodwill and see where else the morning took us.

I asked Reece use the bathroom and gave Lorelai the choice to put on a diaper or try to pee on the potty. She refused the diaper, so I told her she would need to go pee on the potty before she could put her undies back on.

We sat in the bathroom for over 3 hours.

Fruit snacks.

Books.

Drinks.

Ipad.

Lunch.

Iphone.

Popsicle.

Hugs.

Finally, I gave in.

I was tired of sitting in the bathroom and she wanted to get off the potty. It’s been four hours…and, really, 6 hours since she got up and had her diaper changed.

She told me she will let me know when she needs to go.

I even offered her a diaper and she does NOT want to put one on.

We’ve moved outside, and she still hasn’t gone pee…

until just a second ago (at 3:15 pm) when she was standing on the deck and said, “I’m going pee!”

Six hours later.

I’m not sure I’m ready for this.

home is…working on our summer list (some items are easier to cross off than others).

{milestones} the little guy is five

Last night, as I was settling in to bed, the little guy came into our room and said, “Mommy, it’s my birthday. Can I please come snuggle with you? I promise I will fall asleep.”

It was 10 o’clock and I was recalling five years ago when we were told, around that time, that I would need an emergency c-section.  It wasn’t what I had expected, but I really had NO idea what to expect as I had never given birth before.

All we wanted was a healthy baby.

I hugged Reece tight last night as I ran through that night in my head and told him the story he has heard many times before.

“…sitting on the operating table shaking from the medicine they gave me to slow down my contractions to keep you safe. You see, every time I had a contraction your heart rate dropped. They told me to sit still so they could give me another medicine so it didn’t hurt when they made the cut in my belly to get you out…

I held Poppa’s hand and minutes later the doctor announced, ‘You have a healthy baby boy!’

I turned to Poppa, tears streaming, and said, ‘You got your boy.'”

I got my boy….and he is all I could ask for in a little boy

Challenging, frustrating, and defiant at times.

Thoughtful and loving, most.

Strong and funny.

Smart and precocious.

Cautiously observing, sometimes.

Fearless, most.

ALL. BOY.

Yesterday, on his fifth birthday, he learned to ride a bike without training wheels.

Today, he went on a zipline at playgroup…

and, tried riding his bike “off-road”.

He skis.

He climbs rock walls…

among other things…

He loves to go fishing.

He is starting to play team sports.

He loves superheros…especially Batman, Angry Birds, and Mario.

He knows more about the iPhone, iPad, and the Wii than I do…well, not really, but he’s better at all the games.

He still has trouble falling asleep…just like when he was a baby.

He likes to come snuggle in our bed…never liked to snuggle as a baby.

He likes to play with his friends from playgroup, preschool and the neighborhood.

And, is always willing to make new friends at the playground.

He likes to wrestle with his Poppa, shoot nerf guns, train dogs, and hit a baseball.

He’s learning to swim and loves to play at the pool…including going down the water slide and jumping off the diving board by himself.

And, most of all, he adores his family.

He is kind to his sister, is willing to give hugs and kisses, and tells us he loves us all the time.

Reece is all I could ask for in a little boy.

home is…celebrating five years of all boy.

full

Lately, I start my mornings outside in what I call the best seat in the house.

Odyssey likes to share my coffee.

Yesterday, I found this knocked over.

Kind of a bummer.

growing up

I signed the little guy up for camp this week.

Every morning.

As of yesterday morning, he had only gone to one day.

Monday.

He was brave.

After a little bit of a struggle {read: he was hugging me and my legs and not letting go} he walked into the big gym and played along side with kids twice his age.

When I picked him up, he looked so little.

His Batman backpack dwarfing his body.

He wasn’t happy.

He wanted to be with his mommy.

He hurt his toe.

It was cool outside, and they were in the pool for a long time.

I kept him home the next two mornings.

Yesterday, Ryan was home.

He wanted the little guy to go.

I totally understand the lesson he wanted to teach…you sign up for something {and Poppa works hard to make the money that pays for things} and you follow through.

The little guy went to camp.

He walked into that big gym.

He was brave.

He looked so little.

He IS so little.

I wanted him to be home with me.

I cried the whole way home.

When I got home, I cried as Ryan hugged me.

I have to admit, I signed him up for camp for selfish reasons.

I thought I would need the time away from him.

But all I want is to be with him.

And, baby girl.

They are growing up.

Right. Before. My. Eyes.

selfish reasons

I couldn’t wait to pick him up.

Baby girl and I mailed a colton+cadence order and made a quick stop at Goodwill.

Then we went to pick up the little guy.

I told him how brave he was.

I told him how proud I was of him.

I have to admit, I was telling him those things for selfish reasons.

To make myself feel better.

He had fun at camp.

When we got home, I pickled some cucumbers while the kids had a little lunch and quiet time.

Then we went on an adventure.

Local farm stores…

and, Sonic for ice cream…

before dinner!

We played outside in the backyard until Poppa came home.

Baby girl was exhausted after her bath and was asleep the second her head hit the pillow.

The little guy was having trouble going to sleep, so he got to come downstairs and play outside with the neighbors while Ryan and I worked in the garden.

Sometimes big boys get to stay up past bedtime.

I have to admit, I let him stay up way past bedtime for selfish reasons.

To spend time with him that I had missed in the morning.

To redeem myself.

And, to make myself feel better.

Filled.

summer solstice

I was going to write a big post about our yard and how it has changed and grown since my last post, but I am tired and I didn’t take photos with my good camera today.

This morning was beautiful and I enjoyed our backyard…sipping coffee while the kids watched a show inside (it was a bit cold out).

After that, I organized, crafted, and cleaned inside while the kids ate breakfast and played.

Once it warmed up, we moved outside where we organized, played, cleaned (think car wash) outside, and made rainbows.

Summer definitely made an appearance here in the Pacific Northwest today…

I hope you all had a great day, too!

working on it

So, I said it in my about page…I’m a procrastinator.

Yep, still don’t have our summer list done.

Actually, the list is done, but the display is not…and I’ve got to have it all ready for a blog post, right?

We have already crossed two items off the list…

5th annual playgroup birthday celebration

The first year (when all of our oldest turned one), it was 30 adults and 15 kids.

This year we had 26 adults and 26 kids (with one more due this month)!

One of the families lives on 5 awesome acres near wine country, apple orchards, and berry farms.

They graciously hosted the crew and it was fabulous!

Lala found this jumprope…

…and wouldn’t let it go.

And, we lucked out with June weather here in the Pacific Northwest…sunny and in the 70’s!

Bobo had a great time playing with some of his buddies and ran all over the place until he got blisters from his Batman Crocs!

It’s always fun to get the dad’s together with all of the kids.

The dad’s play with the kids, and , after 5 years, I think they know everybody’s name!

They all looked relaxed.

She finally played with the other kids after following me around for almost 2 hours.

Isn’t this outhouse awesome?!

We did it all potluck…the kids love the homemade cupcakes!

We sang Happy Birthday.

The kids shared their cupcakes with me.

This hammock was a hit with all the kids…Lala even wanted me to change her diaper on it!

I gave it a try and decided we need to get one for our backyard!

pool

Today we “officially” went to the pool.

Bobo had gone in a couple of times before his swim lessons, but today we packed a lunch, brought our beach towels, and all had our swimsuits on!

The kids has a blast!

So did I!

Actually, I didn’t sit around.

I got in the pool, went down the water slide multiple times, and left feeling like I had been on a mini vacation.

Sometimes, the easiest way to take care of kids is to act like one yourself!

colton+cadence

I made a fun graduation gift inspired by the theme of the graduation party we went to over the weekend.

I’m thinking about making more to put in the shop…so check it out later this week!

home is…working on our summer list.

be careful what you wish for

Our cat is missing.

And, I’m heartbroken.

Do you want to know why?

Well, I’m going to tell you either way.

I’ve spent the last couple of months nursing him back to health.

Remember this?

Yeah, it all started when Ben got sick.

I was so busy nursing Ben back to health that I didn’t notice that Hobbes was sick, too.

Shortly after our spring snow storm, and during Meme’s visit over spring break it dawned on me…something was wrong with Hobbes.

My mom commented on how he was drinking lots of water and we decided that I should take him to the vet because that is what Murphy did before we found out her kidneys were failing.

So, I took Hobbes in to the vet.

I felt like we had been living there with all the visits for Ben.

{We never did find out what caused him to be so sick. I thought he was dying, but somehow I nursed him back to health and he is back to being the same grumpy old man he has always been.}

Anyway, very quickly we found out that he was diabetic.

Now, a lot of people might choose to not take care of a diabetic cat, but I couldn’t NOT take care of him.

That’s my job.

I am a stay at home mom and I take care of my kids…even my 4 legged fuzzy faced ones.

So, we decided to put Hobbes on a prescription diet, give hime insulin injections twice a day, and take him to the vets once a week for a glucose screening until we had him regulated.

I say “we”, but it was my job.

My job to nurse him back to health.

It didn’t even take two months to get him regulated. The vet said that was the fastest she had ever been able to get a cat regulated.

We were down to 1/2 a unit of insulin twice a day.

And, she sounded encouraged that he may even “decide” to not be diabetic and go in to remission.

I was relieved.

It had all been worth it…except for one big downside.

When Ben was sick it was coming out both ends uncontrollably.

One morning I left all three pets in the house and came home to vomit, poop, and urine in almost every room.

It wasn’t just from Ben.

Odyssey decided to mark his territory.

An honest to goodness pissing match began between all of the boys (the 4 legged fuzzy faced ones).

We had the carpets cleaned, treated, and all the works.

Before the carpets had dried they were peeing all over them again.

UGH!!!

Odyssey spent many days and nights out in his dog kennel (which he doesn’t mind), but as far as I was concerned, he was in the dog house!

Ben was pretty harmless and didn’t  do anything since he was feeling better.

Hobbes, however, wouldn’t stop.

He quit using his litter box.

I cleaned up mess after mess.

Febreze, Oxiclean, air fresheners, open windows, candles.

All I could smell was cat pee.

I put aluminum foil over the areas he was soiling.

He just went as close as he could and soiled and even bigger area.

And, I think he peed in a heat vent because every time the heat comes on the smell gets worse.

Anyway, I was pissed.

I was wondering why I had worn myself out taking care of these pets that were just disrespecting me?

I was so angry with Hobbes and just wanted it to stop.

You see, I got shingles just as we got the OK that Hobbes was regulated on his insulin.

I was so relieved to not have to drive to the vets every week just to get his levels tested.

I was tired and I needed to nurse myself back to health.

Fast forward three weeks to Memorial Day weekend when we enjoyed our yard with family and friends.

Hobbes ventured outside and caught a mouse on Friday.

By Sunday, he was getting brave and spent a lot of time outside in the afternoon.

By nightfall, I asked Ryan to feed him, but I wasn’t sure if he was inside or outside.

We all went to bed.

Sunday morning I noticed Hobbes’ food had not been eaten.

I went out for a bit and when I got home I asked Ryan and the kids if they had seen Hobbes.

We looked all over the house and yard, but could not find him.

I kept my eye open for flashes of white in the neighbors yards.

By Monday evening I noticed some white fur on the wood of our gate…there was a gap big enough for him to slip though.

On walks through the neighborhood I called his name and glanced in hiding places in other yards.

Yesterday, I made flyers and put them on mailboxes and street corners up and down our street.

I got a glimmer of hope with a phone call last night.

Somebody saw our flyer and also saw an orange and white cat on a walk just one street over.

I walked over to check it out.

Sure enough, there was an orange and white cat…with a collar.

Our pets don’t wear collars.

And, then I saw another one.

I called out for Hobbes.

Nothing.

I walked closer.

He ran under a car.

The tail had more stripes.

The face didn’t have  enough orange near the nose.

It wasn’t Hobbes.

Our cat is missing.

And, I am heartbroken.

closer to 3 and 5

I used to have a newborn and a toddler.

Then, I had a toddler and a preschooler.

In less than 2 weeks I will have a preschooler and a kindergartner.

I remember thinking that 2 and 4 was soooo far away.

And, here we are.

Closer to 3 and 5 than we are to 2 and 4.

I want to soak it all in.

Remember every little thing they do.

Capture every smile and, even, every tantrum.

Because it’ll be gone before I know it.

I remember how hard those newborn and toddler days were.

I feel terrible for all of the nasty texts and messages that I sent to Ryan when he was traveling to Seattle every week to support our family.

I also feel so thankful that I was there to be with my children.

Everyday.

Because too soon, they will not be with me everyday.

But, as of today, I have a toddler and a preschooler.

And, I am going to enjoy every second of it.
