grumpy old men

Our house has three of them.

Well, technically, they aren’t men.

They are two dogs and a cat.

Ben, our oldest lab, turns 14 this week.

Odyssey will be 10 on the same day.

Hobbes, our cat, will be 14 in March.

They are a lot of work right now.

Ben doesn’t know if he is coming or going…the poor guy. He wanders aimlessly through the house. Click. Click. Click. The sound of his overgrown nails on the floor is enough to drive you insane. He soils his bed routinely, hasn’t gone up to the second floor in almost two years, and barks outside because it is hard for him to get back up on the deck once he goes down onto the grass. His whole body is stiff. He can’t see well at all. And, I am pretty sure he can’t hear much of anything either. I wonder about his quality of life.

Odyssey has been having some major incontinence issues since late November. We treated him for a UTI. It got better, but then came back. We put him on a second round of antibiotics and had a more sensitive urinalysis done. They found no bacteria. No infection. So, we recently started him on an incontinence drug. A 10-14 day trial. We are 5 days in. It’s not working yet. We are washing his bedding daily as it is soaked every morning. And, he sneaks up onto the kids beds if their doors aren’t closed, so their bedding gets soaked, too. To make matters worse, the washer won’t finish a cycle and it takes forever to get through laundry (the good news is that we have a part on order to hopefully fix that). I am hoping and praying that suddenly this medicine starts to work in the next five days. If not, we are in for seeing a specialist for more imaging to find out what is going on with him. I don’t even want to think of the possibilities.

Hobbes. Our little patient, diabetic kitty. Right now he is just on a prescription diet and we don’t give him injections. It seems to be ok. The good news is that he is no longer peeing all over the house since we got our new floors in. He misses his litter box occasionally, but I now use “wee-wee pads” around his litter box and that soaks up the mess. Hobbes is always the last to get fed and I find him sleeping in my bathroom sink because he falls asleep waiting for somebody to turn on the water for him to drink. He gets grumpy with the dogs. In fact, as I was typing this he was guarding the stairs and would’t let Odyssey past. Just like a grumpy old man.

Lately, I have been impatient with all of them. It feels like every ounce of energy is spent cleaning up messes (theirs and the kids).

I don’t want to let Ben out…AGAIN…so he will, moments later, want to come right back in.

I don’t want to hear Hobbes meow for me to turn on the bathroom sink so he can drink from the faucet.

I don’t want to walk into my bedroom and smell urine on Odyssey’s soaked bed…and have to do another load of laundry.

What I NEED to do is…

take Odyssey for a run to clear my head, get some fresh air, and the exercise I so badly need so I can be patient.

snuggle Hobbes and just turn on the faucet so he is happy.

give Ben a “mommy massage” like I used to do when he would come back from a big hunting weekend with Ryan.

The time will come when there is not a dog to run with, a cat meowing for food or water, and a dog that is barking at the door to be let out or in.

There won’t be soiled beds to wash or a litter box to scoop.

When we moved to Oregon eight years ago we came out here with all of of belongings…including three dogs and two cats. We said goodbye to Murphy in 2009 and Oak in 2010.

Sadly, I see more goodbyes in our near future.

Right now, I’m going for that run with Odyssey.

something fun

you know what i want to accomplish this year?

other than my one word, order.

i want to go away with my husband…for a vacation.

a night.

maybe, a whole weekend.

or,  dreaming big here, even longer!

we have not been anywhere…ALONE, just the two of us, since february 2009.

that’s FIVE years.

FIVE.

YEARS.

he’s been away on his own.

i’ve been away on my own.

we’ve been on vacations as a family.

but, we haven’t been on a vacation (or even a night away) as a couple since BEFORE baby girl was born.

that’s crazy!

seriously.

i’m planning something.

something fun.

home is…getting away as a couple.

i’m never buying granola again

i love yogurt.

homemade granola

one of my favorite treats is yogurt, granola, and fruit.

i eat it almost everyday.

recently i searched on pinterest for homemade granola recipes.

specifically, recipes that are gluten/wheat free.

{if you’ve been following along for  while you may remember that baby girl has a whole wheat sensitivity, so we are not totally gluten free, but try our best so she is not uncomfortable}

i found a few recipes, and after i read through them i figured it would be pretty easy just to come up with my own.

  • 4 cups Trader Joe’s Rolled Oats (they are 100% whole grain/gluten free/wheat free/dairy free)
  • 1-1/2 cup Trader Joe’s Crisp Rice Cereal (this is NOT gluten free, but you can buy a version of Kellogg’s Rice Krispies that ARE gluten free)
  • 1 cup Trader Joe’s Raw Sliced Almonds
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2/3 cup honey
  • cinnamon

mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.

add oil and honey.

mix together until well coated.

spread on a cookie sheet and sprinkle with cinnamon.

put in an oven preheated to 300 degrees.

cook for 15 minutes.

remove from oven and loosen from tray to turn over.

cook for another 10-15 minutes.

remove from oven and let cool.

place in an airtight container.

that’s it!

i am sure you could add a number of other items to the mix, but i like to keep mine pretty simple just to add a crunch to my treat.

i am pretty sure i will never be buying granola from the store again!

feed the birds

christmas is over.

the decorations are stashed in the attic.

the tree is outside…

but we’re not done with it.

feed the birds 6

i asked ryan to haul the tree around to the backyard so we can redecorate it.

eventually, we will use it for firewood, but until then we will feed the birds.

we made birdseed ornaments to place on the tree!

feed the birds 1

before i go on i have to admit that the first batch (above) was an epic FAIL! i got ahead of myself, didn’t mix the ingredients correctly, left the mixture IN the cookie cutters overnight, and they all fell apart.

feed the birds 4

so i started over this morning…

i used the following recipe:

  • 1/4-1/2 cup HOT water
  • 3 tablespoons corn syrup
  • 1 package of unflavored gelatin, such as Knox
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 4 cups birdseed

{go here to get FULL instructions on how to make them as my instructions will be VERY simplified}

before you mix the ingredients, prepare the cookie cutters by spraying them with non-stick spray and place them on a cookie sheet or wax paper.

mix the water, gelatin and corn syrup together until the gelatin dissolves (i heated my water to boiling in the microwave and mixed it all together in a glass measuring cup).

measure the flour into a large mixing bowl and add the liquid mixture. stir together and create a paste the consistency of a cake mix.

add the birdseed and stir until coated.

fill the cookie cutters quickly {the mixture begins to harden fast} and pack them tight. this step was messy and when we make more ornaments we will probably do this outside.

before you remove the shapes from the cookie cutters make a hole for the string {go here for directions}.

carefully remove the shapes from the cookie cutters and place on a wire rack to dry…for at least 6-8 hours…probably best overnight.

feed the birds 8

i also used a muffin tray and packed the mixture into the coated tray, made my hole, and removed them from the tray.

feed the birds 2

place string through the hole and tie a knot for hanging.  any type of string, twine, yarn, ribbon or raffia is suitable {avoid fishing line, however, as it can be dangerous to birds that may find it after the ornaments are consumed}.

feed the birds 3

i’m hoping that the leftover string will be used for nest making material this spring!

hang on your tree!

feed the birds 7

or, if they don’t work out, put the pieces on a tray for the birds to find…

feed the birds 5

annual playgroup christmas party

Can it really be only 9 sleeps until Christmas?!

This weekend we went to our annual playgroup Christmas party.

My friend Melissa hosts each year and it is always a fabulous success.

playgroup christmas 2

Her home is always beautifully decked for the holidays.

This year we took a group photo of Santa with the kids.

playgroup christmas 18

There were some tears…

playgroup christmas 19

a few escape artists…

playgroup christmas 20

but, we got *almost* all of the kids in the photo…without crying.

playgroup christmas 21

I think there are SEVEN kids missing from this photo…

playgroup christmas 24

and to think we started six years ago with one child each…

playgroup christmas 25

and they weren’t even crawling!

playgroup christmas 26

This last photo cracks me up beacuse the kids were told to raise their hand if they were good this year…notice the boy in the teal shirt (and his partner in playgroup crime) in the front row?! They are the ONLY kids NOT raising their hands!

playgroup christmas 5

She even had an adorable craft for the kids, but they were so busy playing that nobody did it…

playgroup christmas 6

Reece, however, knew there was a craft and wouldn’t leave until he had a chance to do it! So, we overstayed our welcome and did the craft. I love that my boy didn’t want to leave the party with out doing the craft!

playgroup christmas 17

We each bring something to eat and there is always plenty of food!

playgroup christmas 16

I neglected to get a good photo of my fruit plate garnish…a sprig of rosemary from our garden decorated with mini pom-poms and bakers twine! I was pretty happy with my last minute creativity!

I love this celebration every year.

wednesday random

Well, happy December!

Better late than never, huh?

We had a great visit with my parents, then I got sick, then it got cold.

The house is in disarray, but it’s warmer today and I am feeling better.

I actually got to shower BEFORE I took the kids to school…well, that was because I was helping with Art Literacy in Reece’s class and I figured I should be showered and dressed.

It was fun…we did a Picasso project. I love volunteering in the classroom. I am so blessed to be able to do it!

A couple of things i have pinned lately…

I absolutely LOVE this paint by number inspired tree!

03-all-through-the-house-ornaments-0114-xln

And, Serena may have inspired our family ornaments this year…so easy!!

photo 2

Did you see these typewriters in the most recent Anthropologie catalog? Beautiful, but $700?! I may just spray paint a couple of the ones I have in my garage!

photo 3

I finished up our Christmas cards this week. They went out in the mail yesterday! I will give you a more detailed view soon {yes, I did SEW mini paper bunting on over 100 cards}!

photo 1

I also made this vintage ornament wreath. Meg made one a few years ago and Erin (@tweetpotatopie) inspired me to finally make one with some of the vintage ornaments I found last year {do you remember I found an entire huge plastic tub of vintage ornaments at goodwill for $4?! I haven’t been so lucky this year}. The wreath is small…maybe only 14″ in diameter, but so much fun! I LOVE it!

So, tomorrow I clean the house and get ready to enjoy the holidays…and finish painting the cabinets and walls that I started way back in June…I told Ryan I would have it done by the end of the year. Nothing like procrastination, right?

home is…home for the holidays.
