early spring in the pacific northwest

I love it here in the Pacific Northwest.

Sure, winters are wet and grey, but it makes spring that much more welcome once it gets here.

It’s here. For now.

{at least it was on Wednesday when I wrote this post}

I know we will still have our share of rain until June, but I don’t have to be worried about late April (or even May) snow like in Colorado. And, I am not celebrating the first week of spring with a snowstorm like our family in New York.

I saw my first hummingbird as I was washing dishes and looking out my kitchen window Wednesday night. When we return from our trip to Colorado I will put our hummingbird feeders out so we can watch them until October!

We’ve played in the mud when the rain takes a break.

Remembered some of our rain soaked and neglected toys.

Played leapfrog…

…and “dogboy”.

Taken our first spring swings.

Enjoyed the early blooms.

Watched the clouds pass above the trees.

And, put our feet up in the sun.

By the time I am finished writing this post the rain will be falling again. {and, it is}

we got nothin’

Actually, at 9:07 pm we got a flash of lightning and a rumble of thunder.

That’s how thunderstorms roll here in the Pacific Northwest.

home is…getting all worked up for nothing.

good side effects

There was a downpour as baby girl and I were leaving to pick up the little guy at school today. A break when we walked into the school. Another downpour when the three of us walked back out to the car. Needless to say, we all needed dry clothes (at least pants) once we got home.

It’s calm here now, but I have kept my eye on the radar online.

Having grown up in Colorado where severe thunderstorms were the norm many afternoons during the spring and into the summer I know my way around a thunderstorm warning.

I hate thunderstorms.

I was so excited to move somewhere where it rains, but without thunder, lightning and tornadoes.

I was so afraid of thunderstorms that I would literally hide in a dark, windowless room until they were over…sometimes for hours. Usually snuggled up with a dog.

When I went on antidepressants in 2003 my fear started going away. My thunderstorm anxiety was not the reason for going on the magic pills, but I must say not having to hide in a dark room when the storms rolled in was a nice side effect. It must have been some of the anti-anxiety magic in those pills. It was awesome to not be afraid of the storms when they came. I could actually function.

In 2005 I stopped taking the antidepressants.

In 2006 we moved to Oregon.

We occasionally have a thunderstorm, but it’s usually no big deal.

Today, the radar is telling me it could be different. I’m not a meteorologist, but I do know how to read a radar. There’s a lot of red coming our way.

The little guy told me today that he hopes there is not any lightning or thunder. It’s hard to be brave for the kids when I really hope that there isn’t lightning or thunder, too.

I’ll let you know if we get any.

Stay tuned…

sunday

Today was a good day in my book.

I got up before the sun.

I rode public transportation.

I explored downtown Portland before daybreak.

I saw some of my favorite mommy friends.

I exercised.

I accomplished a big goal.

I celebrated.

I relaxed.

I spent time with my family.

I got domestic things done.

I ate well.

I drank enough water.

I drank coffee.

I drank beer.

I drank milk and ate cookies.

home is…a good day in the books.

spring fever

Last night the rain pouring down on our skylights kept me up for a couple of hours from about 2am until 4am. I love the sound of rain falling on the roof, but this was like buckets pouring down on the roof!

We had a chance to play outside earlier this week.

There are some flowers blooming in our backyard.

Plenty of mud to play with.

Getting some practice mowing the grass with lawnmower races.

Dirty, soggy, forgotten toys.

Wormies!

stay tuned for color…

I know.

I was supposed to post about using color in our home today.

Once again, I ask you to be patient.

I’m not even going to tell you that I will write about it next week.

I will write about it, I just don’t know when.

I can tell you it will be on a Friday.

Stay tuned.

an etsy favorite: january jones

Sometime last year I found january jones on etsy.

I love their stuff.

I am in the process of finally hanging artwork (after 3 years of living in this house) and some of their prints will most likely make it up on the walls.
The one above would look great with some prints of Aspen in the 70’s that I have from my grandmother.
There are choices other than yellow for the prints, too.
