{milestones} baby girl is one and a half

I haven’t written a milestones post in 6 months.

It seems that everyday there is something new and I want to try to make a point of writing milestones posts for the kids on a more regular basis.

Today we saw the pediatrician for baby girls 18 month well visit.

Here are the official stats:

Weight: 24 lbs 2 oz (47th percentile)

Height: 31 inches (27th percentile)

She received her 1st MMR vaccine today as there has been an outbreak of Measles in the Portland/Vancouver area in the last month. Our pediatrician, who follows a modified immunization schedule as written about in The Vaccine Book by Dr. Robert Sears (and usually puts of the 1st MMR vaccine until after age 2) has recommended that any unvaccinated children over 12 months of age should get the MMR vaccine to protect the public (and our children). So, I tend to follow his direction when he urges us to get a vaccination that he would normally suggest waiting on.

She also got a prick on her finger to get a blood test for food sensitivity. She never drank breastmilk, formula, or milk from a bottle (although, I did breast feed her until she was 13 months) and still refuses to drink any kind of milk (cow, soy, etc.). She also spit up after every meal for the 1st five months of her life! This gave her a terrible rash on her neck and upper chest. She now has eczema on her upper chest/lower neck and has developed some redness around her mouth. She also tends to get congestion in her throat and a “productive” cough on a regular basis (with no other cold symptoms and clear lungs). The nurse and pediatrician thought that all of this could be attributed to a food sensitivity (not allergy) of some kind. So, I figured that if we could find out what might cause the flare ups then we could try to avoid it in her diet. We will have to wait to find out the results!

As far as the “normal development” of an 18 month old is concerned, she is right on track…

So, our next visit will be in one month to receive the vaccinations that we did not receive today due to getting the MMR instead. Then we are on to the yearly well visits from here on out. It’s hard to believe how quickly they go from an infant to a toddler to a preschooler…I can’t even think past that right now!

After our visit to the doctors this morning we took a trip to Target to get some goodies for our upcoming trip to Colorado to visit my family. I will be blogging about that all next week. It will be the first time that we take both kids on an airplane…and my first trip on an airplane in over 2 years!

We also made a stop at Cook Park to play on the playground which I had promised to the little guy if he was a good boy at the doctors and Target. Seriously, the kids have been amazingly good all day today. I have not had to say “No” or “Stop” once!

Now, if you excuse me I am going to go knock on some wood!

home is…meeting “milestones” and being “normal”…whatever “those” and “that” may be!

{milestones} the little guy is three

We celebrated the little guys third birthday on July 5th. Actually, the celebration started on July 2nd when we left our house in Portland for a short vacation at a beach house in Pacific City and continued through the weekend until bedtime on July 5th!

I have to say it…he is the most amazing, smartest, funniest, strongest, fastest, cutest, sweetest three year old I know.

It is incredible to look at video from a year ago when he was only using single words for communication and think about how that has changed to non-stop talking! He is using literally BIG words, like “humongous” and “gigantic”. He loves to make up his own stories and re-tell stories about the adventures that he has been on. Like most three year olds, he loves to ask questions! Right now, “Why?”, is his favorite question. No answer is ever good enough for him…he will keep asking it…about EVERYTHING!

His memory of places, events, and things people have told him is amazing! He will remember places that we haven’t been to in over a year! Recently, we visited WCI, where I used to work, and he remembered some of my co-workers by name…we hadn’t been there in a year!!

When we are driving places, he always asks, “Where are we?” If I just give the answer, “We are driving to _______?” He asks again, “No, where are we?” He has really taken an interest in places…what city we are in, where it is in relation to where we live, where it is in relation to where family members live, etc. So, then I have to go into an explanation of where we are and where it is in relation to our house. He also remembers where his friends live…”Tommy lives in Beaverton!” When he is at home he will pretend he is looking at a map and going someplace (thanks, Dora!) so we also get out maps occasionally and look at them. He’s also a pretty good backseat driver, “No, go this way! Go faster!”

He is adorable with his little sister…most of the time. He definitely has his moments where he is overly aggressive and has to be told to “be nice” to his baby sister (she will be tough, for sure), but there are some very sweet moments, too. One of the first things he asks every morning is, “Where is ‘baby girl’?” Sometimes, when she is crying he will tell her, “It’s okay ‘baby girl’, I’m here. It’s okay.” Other times, when she is crying he will tell her, “‘Baby girl’, you just have to be tough!”

He wants to do lots of things “by myself”, but still asks for my help with some of those same things. Sometimes I remind him that I know he can do it by himself, but others I humor him because I know there will be a time when he won’t want our help with anything!

He is currently in a gymnastics class and a soccer class and does well in both of them. He listens to his teachers most of the time, but he also knows how to goof off! I am not sure yet what kind of student he will be, but it will be interesting to find out down the road…class clown maybe? He seems to always have fun and do a lot of laughing…he’s good at making the other kids laugh, too. He also likes to just observe the other kids…he been an observer since he was a little baby…remember that serious look he always had on his face?!

So, we made it through the “Terrible Two’s”…and looking back, although they were tough, like the title of another blog post, maybe they should be called the “Not-So-Terrible-Two’s“?! I hear from some that the 3’s are harder, and some say it is the 4’s, some say it gets easier…eventually. I think there are always hard times, but when I step back and look at how wonderfully amazing our little guy is it makes it all worth it.

Of course, he throws tantrums, he doesn’t listen, he does things he knows he is not supposed to, he doesn’t go to bed when he is supposed to, he doesn’t want to take naps, he is mean to his sister, he yells, he chases the dogs and cat around the house, he makes big messes and doesn’t want to clean them up…yep, he’s three ad we LOVE him!

(Those of you who have spent some time with him in the last year, what did I forget? Please leave a comment about anything I have left out…this is as much a “memory book” for our children as it is a place to write for me!)

{milestones} baby girl is nine months

PLAYING!

Today, baby girl is 9 months old. It is hard to believe that she is closer to a year old than she is to a newborn. It’s cliche, but it seems like just yesterday when we introduced her to the little guy in the hospital room at St. Vincents. She is a very happy, easy going baby, which makes the fact that she still doesn’t sleep well at night a bit easier to deal with during the day!

Here are a couple of things that I hope she will outgrow as she gets closer to 1 year old:

  • refusing to drink from a bottle (which I gave up on) OR a sippy cup
  • not sleeping for more than a 5 hour stretch at night

Here is what she is up to lately:

  • CRAWLING…almost! She just started a couple of weeks ago and gets around by “frog hopping”, rolling, and pulling herself around…she will have some strong shoulders! She can really cruise around the house, though.
  • TEETH! She got her first tooth this weekend, followed by her 2nd tooth today!
  • EATING…finger foods by herself. She loves to feed herself, and loves to eat! She has lost some of her “chunk” now that she is mobile, but she does not lack in the caloric intake category!
  • PLAYING! Now that she is mobile, she loves to play with toys. She finds her way to all of the little guys toys, which has me chasing after her to make sure she doesn’t try to put the little peices in her mouth! The little guy has been very protective of his train set and puts all the pieces up on the table so baby girl cannot touch them!
  • WAVING & HIGH FIVES! This is a game she will play over and over and keep giggling about. I even find her practicing her waves by waving to herself sometimes!
  • RIDING facing forward next to the little guy in the Dualie BOB during Stroller Strides! This makes for an easier workout for me because I don’t have the extra weight of the carseat. I also think she likes to see the other moms and kids exercise and interact with the little guy!
  • TALKING. She loves to talk, sing and babble. Not sure what her first “word” will be, but I do know she has a lot to say!
  • WRAPPING her Poppa (and the rest of us) around her little finger!

{milestones} baby girl is seven months and the little guy is two and three quarters

Last week baby girl turned 7 months and the little guy turned 2 years and 9 months. Can you believe it?! It goes fast with the first baby, but you blink and your newborn is almost crawling the second time around!

Here are some of the highlights of baby girl at 7 months:

  • Rolling across the floor
  • Scooting backwards
  • Refusing the bottle
  • “Talking”
  • Laughing
  • Bouncing
  • Almost sitting on her own
  • Not yet sleeping thru the night (we got spoiled by the little guy!)
  • Nasty rash on neck from spitting up constantly the 1st 5 months of her life is starting to go away after some TLC
  • No longer spitting up constantly
  • Eating solids and starting finger foods!
  • Taking good naps lately
  • LOVES her brother…he can make her smile and laugh more than anybody!
  • Hazel eyes and dark hair…much more than the Little Guy at this age
  • Happy baby!!!

The little guy is now 2 & 3/4…almost 3! He is a joy to be around. He is SO busy that it exhausts us to keep him entertained, but we do our best. Here is a glimpse of some of what he is into now:

  • ALL boy!
  • Almost fully potty trained!! (still working on #2)
  • Likes trucks, dinosaurs, digging in mud, splashing in puddles, tackling Poppa, rollerskating, playing soccer, t-ball, basketball, hockey, bowling, rollerskating, playing at playgrounds
  • Loves to make up stories and tell stories about things he has done
  • Loves to do anything physical
  • Loves to play outside!
  • Loves his Mommy, Poppa and baby sister
  • Loves to push mommy and poppa’s buttons and test boundaries
