a morning in the life of the little guy

This morning I spent 2-1/2 hours in the little guys preschool classroom. While we are not required to volunteer in the classroom, we are welcome to sign up to visit and help out. Today was my 1st day to help out in his classroom.

We played with cars, read books, made Shamrock headbands, had circle time, took a bathroom break, had snack, went to PE, and had a St. Patrick’s Day parade with the other class through the kindergarten classroom and the main office.

It was like a whirlwind.

Honestly, the quickest 2-1/2 hours that I can remember!

His teachers are amazing.

The kids are adorable.

They have great activities planned, keep the kids moving and engaged, and everybody was getting along and having fun!

The little guy wanted me right by his side the entire time, and I didn’t mind that. The other kids warmed right up to me and were so cute wanting to sit on my lap, have me read them books, and hold my hand in line. I was happy to finally learn some of the daily routine and songs that the little guy sings about the weather and the day of the week.

We also brought the snack for the day which meant the little guy got to wake everybody up from their “rest” and say the prayer before snacktime.

It was a big day.

The little guy hurt himself in PE. He literally ran in to a wall and hurt his chin. I think he would have been fine if I hadn’t been there, but he took full advantage of the fact that mommy was there. His lip quivered, there were tears, and he wanted to stop playing and making noise! He finally sucked it up for our noise parade (they learned about the letter “N” this week), and we all got our happy stamps at the end of PE…even me!

We left the noise parade in PE to play bingo with the letter people and then had a St. Patrick’s Day parade with the hats/headbands that we made at the beginning of class. Teacher Patty did get a photo of the class with their hats on, so hopefully I can add that to this post eventually.

It was a great morning spent with a glimpse into the little guys life when he is not with mommy.

Yesterday he told me that sometimes some of his friends cry and want their mommies when they are at school. I asked him if he every wanted his mommy. He said no. That actually made me happy. I am thrilled that he is so comfortable at his school with his teachers and friends.

After we had that conversation I asked, “Do you love your mommy?”

He replied, “YES!”

I had to have a little validation that he still needs me around…he’s only 3-1/2 for goodness sake!

I had hope to get photos of the morning, but it was so busy there was not even time for me to get my camera (or iPhone) out of my bag!

playhouse: phase 1

So, last Friday I was able to get to Costco and pick up the playhouse! I am so excited!

Today the little guy and I took a trip to Costco for some necessities, and we took a look at the playhouse.

While he wanted to climb all over the mammoth playstructure on display next to it I was able to convince him to take a look at the smaller playhouse.

He liked it.

He wanted us to take one home.

This afternoon I had a conversation with the little guy about the playhouse while we were roasting fruit snacks over our imaginary campfire (heating vent).

Me: “That playhouse at Costco was cool, wasn’t it?”

Little Guy: “Yeah. I want one.”

M: “We’ll talk to Poppa about it. Where would we put a playhouse like that?”

LG: “I know! We could put it in the backyard.  We have plenty of room in the grass out there.”

M: “When would you play in it?”

LG: “In the summer.”

M: “What would you do in it?”

LG: “I would play with my little sister-wister.”

The stage is set.

The next step is to get a plan drawn out for the platform in between the trees. I will need to consult my treehouse building books for that one!

home is…being more excited about a playhouse than my kids are!

the little guy said…

The first words out of the little guys mouth this morning as we were snuggling in bed:

“Mommy, when I grow up I want to be a BatMobile driver…and, I will speed away!”

(He’s really into Batman now.)

funtime carnival

I love the little guys school.

Remember this post from a year ago?

I couldn’t be happier with our choice.

And, most importantly, he loves it too!

On Friday night there was a carnival at his school for all the families to attend.

Games, prizes, balloons…the kids had a blast!

the little guy said…

On the way home from school yesterday the little guy asked, “Mommy, is it grandpa hogs day today?”

(He learned about Groundhogs Day and seeing shadows in school last week)

Also on the way home…

Baby girl was crying and the little guy said to her, “We’re almost home, sweetie. We’re almost home. OK, sweetie?”

He kept repeating this until she stopped crying. He takes good care of his baby sister.

{milestones} the little guy is two and a half and baby girl is four months

This week the little guy turned 2-1/2 and baby girl is now 4 months old!

The Little Guy at 2-1/2:

  • Has all of his teeth and cannot use them as an excuse to get “medness” (medicine) and prolong the bedtime routine.
  • Fed ducks down at the park and the “mommy duck” ate bread out of his hand.
  • Loves to watch himself in videos made on the Flip…loves to sing, dance, and mimic his favorite TV character (of the moment), Caillou.
  • Has gone 2 days in a row this weekend without a wet diaper…we may be moving on to underpants!
  • Is an awesome big brother and very patient and kind to his little sister…except when she needs to eat.  He says. “Mommy no feed baby girl.”

Baby Girl at 4 months :

  • Eats all the time and gets mommy up multiple times a night…I hope she learns the benefits of sleep, too!
  • Rolled over from her tummy to her back 3 times in a row yesterday.
  • Smiles A LOT…she is such a happy baby!
  • Had mommy laughing tonight after her bath because she was giggling as I was putting lotion on her face!

the boy who was raised by black labs

Our first “children” were animals.  In December 1999, a diluted calico cat named Murphy was adopted from the Dumb Friends League in Denver.  In March 2000, a black lab puppy named Ben came from our good friend and Grand River trainer/breeder Mike Gould.  In September 2000, an orange and white tabby named Hobbes was adopted from the Dumb Friends League.  In November 2003, an 8 year old black lab named Oak was adopted from Mike Gould.  In April 2004, a black lab puppy named Odyssey, again came from Mike Gould.

For almost 8 years we were the proud parents of our five-fuzzy-faces.  The dogs would go everywhere with us.  We drove across the country to Upstate New York with a stop in Chicago for a family wedding…all with Ben in tow!We went on many roadtrips through Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho with all 3 of them…learning what hotels were pet friendly along the way.  My husband would take the boy dogs hunting anywhere from 40-60 days each fall.  They would all go camping and hiking with us during the summer.   They drove with us from Colorado to Oregon when we moved.  Oak used to go to work with me almost everyday here in Oregon.  They lived the high life!

Then July 5, 2007 came.  The world as they knew it stopped.  Our baby boy arrived and they were relegated to the dog runs and scolded for getting too close to the baby.  Oh, I was afraid that we wouldn’t be able to give them the attention they were used to…and we weren’t…but our little guy is!

The little guy LOVES his doggies!  The first word-like sound he made was “woof”; his first word was “doggie”; his first 2-word phrase was “good girl”;  the second 2-word phrase was “bad dog”; and his first 3-word phrase was “no bark dog”.  When he wakes up in the morning he asks where Oak is.  He loves to share his toys and food with the dogs.  He crawls all over them, snuggles on their dog beds, and loves to play chase with them in the house.  He is part of their pack.

When we are outside in the back yard he loves to play in their dogs runs.  He opens and closes the door, pretends to fill up their water buckets, and likes it even better if they will play along with him…Odyssey usually obliges.  Oftentimes, I will find him hiding in the dog crate we keep in the house for “doggie timeouts”…sometimes he will be in there with one of the dogs.  I am sure that he thinks every kid has a house full of black labs  just like he does.

The dogs (and cats) may not get the attention they used to from us, but our little guy sure thinks the world of them.  Their days are lazy, and they get to stay in the house most of the time, now.  My husband runs the boys down at the river once or twice a week…when he can. Oak is pretty much blind, deaf, and very needy so I try to give her extra attention whenever possible.  I am not sure how much longer we will have her around…she has been a mom to around 30 puppies…and acts as a “doggie nanny” to our little guy.  They are all wonderful pets and “children”…including the boy who was raised by Black Labs.
