never enough

although we’ve checked things off our summer list, and had a fun filled summer…with 3 weeks left to go I feel like I haven’t done enough.
are my kids happy?
are they having a good summer?
do I snap at them too much when I am tired and just need a break?
it’s exhausting keeping them occupied.
then add on the projects that I try to jam in around the house, blogging, time to craft, laundry, cleaning up after everybody…and, maybe, just maybe a little downtime or time for myself.
my exercise routine has gone to hell because I am so concerned about doing things for the kids.
which, of course, makes me more on edge…exercise is my only release sometimes.
and, of course, now I’m just being negative, complaining, bitching.
my worst nightmare is that I will be thought of as a negative person.
home is…hoping my kids think I am a good mom because I don’t always feel that way.

play outside every day

As you know we have been working on making our yard kid and family friendly this summer.

Our backyard was a clean slate as far as kids toys and activities were concerned. Up until this summer we got by with a few riding toys, a hose, some balls, and the dog water buckets.

This summer it changed.

I saw it coming last summer and had a plan in place. I knew what I wanted to do, but also knew I couldn’t get it done by myself.

You can see the progress of the plan here, here, here and here.

We have some professionals coming in a few weeks to finish the job, and I will post an update when they are done. I think it will take until next summer to really see how things turn out, but we are happy with the progress.

Our latest addition was an easy one that came from an idea I saw on Pinterest.

As I told you in this post, we don’t have a chalk friendly sidewalk or driveway at our house, so I have had to come up with other ideas.

So, along with the sandwich board chalkboard, I also made a large 4′ x 4′ chalkboard that we hung up on the fence.

I bought a precut 4′ x 4′ piece of plywood, primed it, and painted it with chalkboard paint. Ryan hung it up on the fence with screws (we also added some extra blocking with a 1′ x 4′ where he attached it to the fence).

All we had to do was add chalk.

I think I will also hang some of the buckets of chalk like I did with the sandwich board.

It adds some fun to the backyard and is definitely nicer to look at than the fence. I also think we will be able to use it for some fun photo opportunities in the backyard!

home is…family friendly backyards!

8.14.2004

Remember this photo from this post?

I told you there was a story behind it.

Here it is…

My husband and I spent a lot of time in the Colorado high country when we lived there.

One of our favorite places were the Flat Tops.

We camped up there in the same spot year after year.

My husband named it “Sunny’s Camp”.

On August 14th, 2004 we drove up to our camp for a weekend of camping, hiking, and probably scouting for Blue Grouse.

On the way up the long dirt road we passed by one of the trailers that they sheepherders use for a base camp. The young man came over to our truck and asked us if we had seen a horse on our drive. He said he had the sheep down in the canyon the night before and some bears came through and spooked the horses. He found one, but was still looking for the other one. We let him know we would look for his horse and told him where we were going to set up our camp. We kept on down the road, through the herd of sheep with the Kuvasz keeping watch as we passed.

Once we pulled into our camp we let the dogs out and started to unload the car and all of our gear. After a while I heard our dogs barking. We called them back to camp, but they kept barking and running up a small hill behind our camp. Finally, we tied them up while we continued to set up camp.

A short time later, while we were still settling in and unpacking we heard a loud noise coming up from the canyon below. I ran out from the trees that surrounded our camp into the open park and waved at a large Army helicopter. As I waved it got closer and closer and then landed in the park.

“Oh no,” I thought. “What if they think I am waving at them for help?!”

We had low flying planes and helicopters fly over our camp numerous times as the Army did some of their high altitude training for Afganistan from the Eagle Country airport nearby, but never had one land!

One of the men, looking very official, hopped out of the helicopter and came running over to me.

He asked me if the horse up on the hill was ours.

Immediately I knew what the dogs had been barking at and whose horse it was.

I told him no, but that we knew whose horse it was.

He explained to me that he knew the family who ran their sheep up there and they called to see if they would be able to run any of the training missions over the area to look for the lost horses. I told him we would take care of the horse and he said he would give the family a call.

So, Ryan and I walked up the hill to find the horse and get it free. It had gotten loose when the bear spooked it and run out of the canyon and finally tangled it’s lead (or the rope that they tie it up with for the night) in a tree near our camp. Ryan (who was not very fond of horses at the time) and I worked for a while to get it free and once we did, we had no idea what we were going to do with it!

We slowly led it down to our camp and decided to tie it to the old rail fence that ran along the trees on one side of our camp.

{this is a photo of the rail fence on a different day}

Once we tied the horse up we got in our truck and drove to the sheepherders trailer to leave a note to let him know we had his horse and where he could find us.

After about an hour (or maybe 2) we heard a pickup drive up the road towards our camp. It was the sheepherder coming to get his horse. We told him the story and he tied it up to the back of his truck and slowly drove down the road back to his base camp…he had to get back to work.

And, we had to get back to relaxing.

{Sunny’s Camp}

It’s hard to remember all the little details…in fact, I couldn’t remember if we saw the horse and then the helicopter, or vice versa…I still might have gotten it wrong.

At any rate, it was an exciting little adventure.

That helicopter landing right next to our camp after I was waving to it from the park sure got my heart pounding.

home is…reliving adventures from the past.

so much

“Oh, there’s so much,” a former boss used to say before she would start off a story.

That’s how I feel right now.

So much.

So much I need to do.

So much I want to do.

So much I have to do.

So much I don’t want to do.

Not enough time for any of it.

So, I will make time for what is important, fun, and keeps me sane.

The rest will have to wait.

My list making is not even keeping up with my thoughts at this point in time.

Oh well.

We have made a HUGE dent in our Summer List.

In fact, the last few things that are left are things that I put on there as the long stretches…meaning, they may be too much for this summer and might have to wait until next or ever a few years from now.

I am proud and happy with what we have accomplished. It has been fun.

And, yes, father-in-law, I know I owe you photos.

I also owe the entire family our photo album from 2010.

And, need to finish painting the little guys room.

And, finish hanging up art in baby girls room.

And, need to paint our bedroom.

And, need to do the laundry.

And, need to finish my craft closet.

And, need to redesign Ryan’s office.

And, want to take a photography class.

And, want to learn to sew.

And…well, that’s all I can remember right now.

home is…there is always so much.

drills, crib parts, and chalk…oh my!

We finally have summer here in the Pacific Northwest and some of the projects that we have had planned for our backyard are finally getting done.

I went out last week to add some features to the playhouse and found out that our drill had bitten the dust, so I had to wait for Ryan to decide which drill he wanted to replace it with and the kids and I worked on a “drill-less” water wall project instead.

Ryan came home with a drill the other night and due to the fact that I was working on another project (someone is getting a room redesign that I will blog about soon) I did not get to use the drill until this morning.

The sidewalk and driveway at our  house are an aggregate and do not get along well with sidewalk chalk, so I have had to come up with other ideas for using the chalk…one of which was our deck that was in desperate need of refinishing (that is now done) and our fence. While both were fine alternatives for the short term, I needed a long term solution to our dilemma.

I used more recalled crib parts to make an outdoor sandwich board style chalkboard!

Here is a crude tutorial on how I did it…really, the photos are very fuzzy, sorry!

First, I bought pre-cut pieces of plywood at Home Depot, primed them, and painted them with chalkboard paint. Of course, I don’t have any photos of that process, but it’s pretty simple.

Here are the crib parts that I used…they are the small ends of the crib (the large ends were given away as a headboard and footboard for a full size bed as they were still safe to be used that way).

Next, I lined the sides up next to each other and added hinges that I found in the door hardware aisle at Home Depot.

After that I added chain to the side to keep them from opening up all the way while the kids are drawing on the boards.

Then, I screwed the painted plywood to the crib panels.

See, you can see the texture of our driveway…not chalk friendly at all.

Also, do you notice my husband filling water balloons?! He was preparing for a water balloon battle with the boys next door that should happen later today.

So, pretty easy and I feel good about my reuse of the recalled crib parts!

I also added “s” hooks to the chain to hang some cute buckets I had sitting around to hold the chalk!

I have another chalkboard project that I will blog about in the next little while…stay tuned!

home is…mommies who can use power tools!
