{july 5} 2she gave him matchbox cars, gummy bears, and gummy worms…which were all on his birthday list!
{july 5} 3he also go a phone call from meme and topher, and was able to open the gift they sent to him.

{july 5} 4

{july 5} 1i ran out to get birthday breakfast from dunkin donuts.
{july 5} 5nothing like being able to light your own birthday candle!

{july 5} 6bops took us on another hike in the area.

{july 5} 7i got a little one on one time with the birthday boy…my favorite part of the day!

birthday dinner.

homemade ice cream cake.

presents.{july 5} 14doesn’t get much better than that when you are eight…or any age for that matter!

{milestones} the little guy is eight

eight years old.

do you know what that means?

it means that i have been a mom for more than half of our married life.

we waited seven years to have kids.

let me tell you, this eight year old made it all worth it.

he is an amazing human being.

he’s loving…he loves his family and friends like crazy.

he’s funny…especially when he’s not trying too hard to be funny.

he’s strong…headstrong, heart strong, and physically strong.

he’s brave…he’s willing to try anything…sports, food, new activities.

he’s smart…he doesn’t love our summer learning packets, but he does love to learn. he excelled in first grade, and i think second grade is going to be an awesome year for him!

he has his own opinions, ideas, and thoughts.

i love him so very much.

i asked him some questions this morning to get a feel for how he feels at eight…

fourth of july.

independence day.

we took a whole family photo, which happens every two years when we visit.

{july 4} 1there’s usually a theme associated with the photo.

{july 4} 2this year, each generation wore a different color bandana.

{july 4} 3the cousins are still stair steps, but some of them are evening out.

{july 4} 4{18, 13, 10, 8, 7-364/365, 5, 5, 3}

{july 4} 5this guy was way too big for me to catch. he was wondering why we were invading his quiet space.

{july 4} 6for duck races, of course!

{july 4} 7

{july 4} 8the creek wasn’t flowing as fast as it had been a couple of days ago.

{july 4} 9

{july 4} 10the ducks had to be urged on a bit.

{july 4} 11

{july 4} 12the kids swam in the pool while we prepared dinner. ryan and i were in charge of most of the food. there was definitely plenty to eat!

watching your kids play is fun.

playing with them is even more fun!

we played today.

walks.

bike rides.

scooters.

trikes.

a game of bocci.

an epic nerf gun battle.

it was awesome to move and laugh with the kids today.

look at what i found…

{july 3} 1

i noticed a mama sparrow with food sitting on the front porch railing at my sister-in-law’s house.

i watched where she flew and peeked after she left.

one little baby.

ryan went out with some friends tonight. after i got the kids to sleep, i watched the fireflies dance all over the backyard near the creek.

ryan’s mom tells a story about the night that the little guy was born. one of our nephews was having a sleepover at nana and bop’s house and said he saw something winking at him out the window. they looked out to see fireflies all over the backyard.

so magical.

i fell asleep to a cool breeze and sounds of the creek through the windows last night.

this morning, after a slow start, the kids and i went for a hike with ryan’s dad and their cousin while ryan and his mom drove to buffalo for the day.

{july 2} 1bops took us on a cool hike just a mile from their house.

{july 2} 2he has been volunteering with the friends of webster trails for years and is very knowledgable about the trail systems throughout the area.

{july 2} 3many of the trail projects, including boardwalks and bridges, have been local eagle scout projects.

{july 2} 4others are all volunteer efforts by the friends of webster trails.

{july 2} 5you can read more about the projects and the trail system in the newsletter that my father in law is in charge of editing.

{july 2} 6of course, knowing that there might be something old and rusty on the trail kept me going.

{july 2} 7there were a few old cars out here…story is that they used to be used in mud races when this was just an empty field.

{july 2} 8looks like this one wasn’t victorious.

{july 2} 9

afternoon was spent playing outside and cleaning up the creek for duck races later in our visit.

{july 2} 10

{july 2} 11

{july 2} 12

{july 2} 13and, for the record, i almost caught a frog! i am no good at holding frogs and snakes and i would like to, at the very least, be able to hold little frogs for the kids. this was a cute little guy that i tried to catch. i am bound and determined to catch one by the end of the trip!

i asked the kids to sit for this photo last night because i knew i had another one from our last visit to rochester over the fourth of july 2013.

in rochesterafter searching through the photos on my computer without luck, i scrolled through two years worth of my instagram feed and found this…

rochester summer 2013

wow. they have grown up a lot!

{july 1} 1decorating rubber ducks for cousin duck races in the creek.

{july 1} 2puzzles.

{july 1} 3crafts at aunt tracy’s house.

{july 1} 4cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents!

{july 1} 5a little play time in the creek until the skeeters found them!

summer 2015: 20/89

pdxwe were up at 3:30 am to get to the airport for a 7:00 am flight.

in the airafter a short delay we were on our way!

on the planethe trip was so smooth and easy compared to the last time we flew with the kids. it’s amazing what a big difference two years can make. they really do grow up fast.

in rochesteralmost exactly two years ago they sat on this same bench.

we made it to new york!

some friends in the neighborhood brought these adorable balloons for the kids last night. thank you, brandi, elle, and ava…the kids LOVE them!

most of today was spent packing, covering last minute details, and getting things organized for our house sitter before we head across the country tomorrow morning.

now i just want to get this show on the road!

the home team

i wrote this post a little over a year ago and never hit publish.

today, i decided to hit publish on it.

i don’t have to single parent for the long haul very often anymore.

in ryan’s current job he only has long stretches of travel once or twice a year.

i am so thankful for that.

in hindsight…

maybe, during those really, really tough times when the kids were really little and  i was sending ryan nasty text and voicemail messages about how hard it was to be home alone with young kids and how tired and frustrated i was while he traveled for work, i should have thanked him for working his ass off to take care of our family so i could be home to take care of our kids.

and, maybe, i should have asked for help.

no, maybe, i should have screamed for help.

but i didn’t.

i struggled through it.

WE struggled through it.

it’s the curse of the competent…

you don’t ask for help {and write a blog that focuses on the good things in our life} and people don;t think you need it.

of course, family would be there for you if you lived closer, but you don’t, so they don’t see how hard it is.

so, you struggle through, and try to focus on the positive, so you can get through another day.

i’m thankful i made it through the really, really tough times.

i’m thankful WE made it through the really, really tough times.

i’m thankful i can be home to raise my kids.

i’m thankful that ryan works damn hard so that i can be here with them everyday.

i’m also thankful that the long trips are few and far between.

truthfully, i don’t need the help these days.

i did, but i don’t now.

and, you know what, even when i needed the help, i still did it myself.

WE did it.

our family is stronger for that.

thank you, ryan, for working your ass off.

WE do this together…no matter how hard it is.

home is…your home team.
